How to prepare your book for publishing

We recommend you print this page and and keep it handy while preparing your book for uploading to ZuluLibrary.

Tips For Writers
Do NOT use the carriage return key when approaching the right margin, let your word processor 'wrap' the text onto the next line. Only use the carriage return key if you want to 'force' a new line. The reason is that your eBook will be read on different size screens.

Only put ONE space between sentences. Double-spacing between sentences is a hangover from the days of manual typewriters and is no longer an accepted practice.

If you have already explored the ZuluExpress library where your book will soon be published, you will have seen that in order to most effectively promote your book to potential readers we provide:
A short biography and a photo of the author.
A synopsis (or summary) of your book.
A sample chapter.
A cover image.
These files are similar to what you expect to see on the cover of an old fashioned book in a book shop, designed to help the reader decide if they will spend their hard earned money on buying your story. Please spend some time preparing these files before uploading them along with your book as they are the silent salesmen you will be relying on. Below you will find information needed to prepare each of these files. You might find it useful to print this page and keep it handy while preparing your book for publishing.

Biography (About The Author) and photo
Write a short, (no more than 30 lines,) story about yourself and save it as a .html file. Check out some of those in the library if you need inspiration.
Your photo must be in JPG format and be as close to the recommended size of 100 pixels wide, 150 pixels high and with a file size of no more than 60kb.

NOTE: Your biography and photo aren't uploaded with your book. They are part of your profile and should be uploaded from your "Member's Page" before you upload your book.

Synopsis File
Write a brief outline of your story that will grab a potential reader’s attention and create interest without giving too much away. Save as a .html file.

Sample Chapter File
Choose a sample chapter (or excerpt) that you think will interest readers and influence them to buy your book. Save as a .html file.

Cover Image File
You need to prepare a cover which will accompany your book in the library. A good eye catching cover is very helpful in attracting attention. You will need two versions of your cover image, a full size one (480 pixels wide x 640 pixels high with a file size of no more than 150kb) which will become a part of your book and a smaller one (100 pixels wide and 150 pixels high with a file size of no more than 50kb) which you will upload along with your book for use in the library. Both versions must be in JPG format. If you don't have a graphics program such as photoshop you might want to google "EBOOK COVER DESIGN" where you will find many links to ebook cover artists and cover creation software. If you are able to prepare your own cover please do so and save for uploading. If all else fails, click here to contact us and we will put you in touch with a cover designer.

Book File
This is the complete, ready to read ePub file that the customer will download.

If you are NOT computer savvy then the instructions below may sound a bit too much for you but don't worry, we can still get you published. Simply click here to send us an email to introduce yourself and attach your manuscript file and your cover image file. We will then convert your book into an ePub for free and send it back to you so you can upload it to the library.

If you are computer savvy then we recommend you save your book as a html file and use Calibre to convert it to an ePub book which can be uploaded to the library.
Calibre is a free program which can be downloaded here.
If your book is still in manuscript form created in MS Word or some other Word Processor program then you might want to use Sigil which is essentially a word processor program that creates ePub eBooks as it's native format. Sigil is also a free program and can be downloaded here.
Both Calibre and Sigil are open source community projects so you can get help from other users on the forum pages of their respective websites.
Make sure you have created your full size cover image first as you will need to have it handy so Calibre can embed it into your new ePub.

The most important step before uploading your eBook is to test it to make sure that it is fully compliant with the ePUB standard. That way you will know that your eBook can be read on the widest range of both hardware and software eBook readers in the world. Don't worry, it's very easy to do. The quickest and simplest way to test your ePubs is by opening them in 'Adobe Digital Editions', a free program you can download from here. (Just click the "Launch" button half down the left side of the page and ADE will be installed on your computer.)

Once you have all your files ready you will be only about 2 minutes away from being a published author and having your book available to billions of readers around the world!
As soon as you have everything prepared, return to this page and click here.
